Reviewing Terry Nelson, Owner & Videographer, MatriMovie
Brides who choose MatriMovie are looking for a time capsule of their wedding day, a documentary that will show them the moments they want to remember, and the moments they didn't even know about. "A wedding video is the most important documentary you'll ever see," says Terry Nelson, owner of MatriMovie. "You play the starring role."
MatriMovie designs all of their services around what is needed to make a great wedding video that you'll love for a lifetime. They cover the rehearsal because they want to, not because they have to. They interview guests and wedding party members throughout the day because it makes for a great story, and at no additional charge to you. They include blooper reels when the day delivers enough mishaps to share a laugh or two. They also come with the credit of years of film and wedding experience to bring your memories together in a cheese-free, professional manner that appeals to even the most cautious brides. "Most people find
that they watch their wedding video more than they’ll look at their still shots." For Terry, that's one of the greatest rewards he could get for his work. Let us explain...
Personally speaking: A collaboration concept MatriMovie is a wedding-focused division of Innertainment Media, a Kitchener-based company, with a Manitoba office as well. MatriMovie is made up of Terry Nelson and several freelance artists and designers that collaborate together on artistic and commercial projects.
As the face of the company and also the cutting room editor of all wedding videos that they take on, Terry says he personally checks out each artist to ensure that he or she can deliver the same quality of service as he would himself.
Terry's own resume includes a fair amount of experience in the movie industry. He attended film school in Hawaii where he majored in film and video before moving on to New York to intern and then crew work in Toronto, working on feature films he describes as, "... some major, some minor." But throughout the years, one thing has remained the same. He's passionate about film.
Terry is professional, well-dressed, young, and easy to like. He seems to know how to be quiet when he needs to be, and get involved when you want him to be. Terry knows what you’re looking for when you book a wedding video. He’s been married only two years himself.
Going into his fourth year in the wedding industry, Terry says that living up to the MatriMovie name and reputation is his most important priority.
Shooting style: Moments & commentary Terry describes MatriMovie’s style as, "Fly-on-the-wall photojournalism with some interviews of the cast through out the day." Their goal is to capture the atmosphere of the day while gathering commentary along the way. There’s nothing really pre-planned about your video, for the most part. By taking the moments in as they come, MatriMovie is able to create videos that are as unique as you are.
When you watch MatriMovie demo wedding videos, you might notice that the 'cast' of people on film are at ease with the camera and having fun. No one is looking nervously in the direction of the camera. This is one of the first signs of an excellent videographer.
High on style, low on cheese "Since no two couples are the same, no two wedding videos will be the same," says Terry, who also describes the MatriMovie style as, "high on style, low on cheese" (taking care of the stigma that sometimes surrounds wedding videography).
"You will have creative freedom and input to help make a video that suits your taste," even though most of couples opt for the casual photojournalistic approach. "Really, we are there to create a living, breathing document of the entire wedding experience..." Your video is meant to be as fun and entertaining as it is sentimental and timeless.
Videos sometimes include interviews with flower girls, captions from the photo shoot, the best parts of the ceremony, the guests dancing and having a blast at your reception and more.
Getting started: A collaborative effort A wedding video is a fully collaborative project between the bride and groom and Terry and his team at MatriMovie. The couple is involved from the very first shot, to the final product. Terry incorporates their style and taste into the final product. The bride and groom will even get to select their background music. Terry will include a selection of still photos from the wedding and honeymoon to round out the video because for him, "It's about details."
Terry doesn’t limit the time that he’ll be at your wedding. He’s there until he gets all the footage. "Your wedding is the one time when everyone that is important in your lives is in one place at one time."
MatriMovie starts the filming of your wedding at the rehearsal. This is a great time to talk to the minister about the best place to set up, shooting angles and any rules that your church may have in regards to video. Then, on the wedding day they'll shoot the bride getting ready, the groom getting ready, the wedding itself (of course), and the reception. They stay at the wedding reception until the party starts to wind down. They make sure that they capture all the essential moments like speeches, garter and bouquet toss, cake cutting, and of course first dances.
Terry ensures that not only are all the special moments captured, but all of your family and friends will have their moment in the spotlight as well. "We make sure that we include the well wishes of the family."
Satisfaction guaranteed Since it's a fully collaborative project, Terry personally guarantees that you’ll be satisfied with the final product. And if for some reason you're not satisfied, he'll continue to cut and edit until you are, saying, "I've never had a couple who wasn’t 100% satisfied with their video."
Pricing, extras & hiring Packages range in price from $600 to $2300, all of which are designed to fit into your budget and the level of features you'd like to have worked into your video. "Because we have our own production equipment and virtually no overhead, we can keep our costs down without sacrificing the quality." To make it simple to choose, MatriMovie lists all options in detail on their website.
Terry says that when you receive your video, you'll see it's a real DVD. It will come in a regular case, with a custom designed cover to make it look like any other DVD on your shelf. It'll even be rated as appropriate by you. Foul language can be edited to be appropriate for all audiences.
Technically speaking... When you choose MatriMovie, you can rest assured knowing that all their equipment is professional quality. "Our videos are shot on 3-chip digital Mini-DV cameras provided by makers like Sony, Canon, and Panasonic." Once the footage has been captured, the quality is maintained with the use of digital non-linear editing suites.
No pressure... Before booking with MatriMovie or any other video company, Terry suggests that you check out a sample of their work. Then judge the video based on work and style to make sure they are a match.
